Collections at Biology
The Biology Library Collection includes materials in many aspects of the pure (i.e., non-applied) life sciences. We collect at the research level in four areas: Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, Systematics and Animal Behavior. These areas are broadly defined to include many related disciplines such as biogeography, conservation biology, and landscape ecology. In addition to these core areas, we collect at the instructional and reference levels in general botany and zoology, plant and animal anatomy, morphology and physiology. We have particularly thorough holdings in ornithology and floras from around the world.
Our collection consists primarily of print materials in book and serial format. Increasingly, we provide access to subject databases in electronic format, as well as electronic journals, internet resources, audiotapes and computer software. We have a small collection of microfiche (a few journals and herbaria) and do not collect videos.
The library has a Rare Book Room which houses botanical and zoological monographs from the 17th through 19th centuries, as well as a number of 19th century journals and the complete run of the Zoological Record.
Small subsets of the collection are stored in the University of Wisconsin Herbarium and the University of Wisconsin Zoology Museum. Holdings in these locations do not circulate but are included in MadCat's holdings.
